I’ve been trying to take my faith more seriously this year and I keep running into the terms “mortal sin” and “venial sin.” I get the basic idea that mortal is “serious,” but I’m honestly confused about what makes something mortal versus venial in real life.
For example: if I lose my temper with my family, or I intentionally skip prayer for a few days, or I watch something I know isn’t great for me spiritually—how do I know what category it falls into? I’ve also heard people say you need confession for mortal sin before receiving Communion, and that scares me a bit because I don’t want to accidentally receive unworthily.
Can someone explain the difference in a way that’s faithful to the Church but also practical? And if you’re not sure whether something was mortal, what do you do?
