I’ve been Catholic my whole life, but lately I’ve realized I’m often “present” at Mass without really being present. I show up on time, I follow along, but my mind wanders and I end up just watching the priest and choir like it’s something happening in front of me instead of something I’m part of.
I want to participate more actively in the liturgy in a way that’s actually Catholic and not just “be busy.” I’m not looking to draw attention to myself or turn it into a performance. I just want my heart to engage: the prayers, the responses, the singing, the listening, receiving Communion, all of it.
A few details: I’m pretty shy, not a confident singer, and my parish has a mix of older folks and young families. Sometimes the music is beautiful, sometimes it’s… not my favorite. Also, I’m not currently in any ministry, and I don’t really know what would help me grow without overcommitting.
What practical steps helped you participate more actively at Mass? Anything you do before/after Mass, ways to pray the parts, or little habits that make a big difference?
