Hi everyone. I’ve been trying to read the Bible more consistently (about a chapter a day), and I keep getting stuck on passages that feel confusing or even harsh—especially in the Old Testament and sometimes in St. Paul. I’m Catholic and I want to take Scripture seriously, but I’m not sure how to read parts that seem violent, contradictory, or hard to apply.
Sometimes I’ll read a commentary online and it helps, but other times I find completely different explanations and I don’t know what’s trustworthy. I also don’t want to cherry-pick only the “easy” verses.
What’s a good Catholic approach for understanding difficult Bible passages without getting discouraged? Any recommended habits (prayer, study method, resources) that keep you grounded in the Church’s teaching?
